When Marissa’s fiancé leaves her unexpectedly, she is left trying to put the broken pieces of her life back together again. The magical years of her childhood are now lost or long forgotten and, trapped in a downward spiral of worry and anxiety, nothing seems to be bringing the magic back any time soon.

Training to become a therapist, Marissa discovers an unforeseen talent for helping others and, for a while at least, she puts her own needs and concerns to one side. An unexpected windfall prompts a spontaneous trip to Peru, and an encounter while she is there triggers an astonishing series of events. Shaken but excited, Marissa embarks on a wonderful journey of revelation and adventure – after which, her life will never be the same again.

Marissa’s story is your story, is my story, is everybody’s story: we each must find our own true path through life, our one true way.

Abby Wynne, author and Shamanic Psychotherapist, brings all her wisdom to bear on Marissa’s amazing tale of discovery and healing. A catalyst for people’s healing processes, Abby is a problem solver, a creative artist, an alchemist, a healer, a mother, a daughter, a lover of life – and it shows in this, her first novel.

Read an excerpt:

Marissa looked out the window at the moonlight. It was half a moon and seemed to glisten through the tree branches. The leaves were falling, the days were getting darker earlier and earlier. A single star blinked in the pale sky, but the sky was too bright with light pollution to see anything more. She looked at the cloud as it crawled towards the moon, shifting and changing its shape. She could see a dragon in it for a moment, then it turned into puffs of smoke, and then the moon was hidden.

She put the notebook down beside her laptop and climbed into bed, leaving the curtains open. She liked moonlight. Her room in the half-light felt like an in-between place, her breathing slowing down, her body relaxing. Tobermory jumped up beside her, looking straight into her eyes. She stroked his back.

‘My familiar, my friend, my cat,’ she said, ‘what do you think? Do you have an answer for me?’

As usual, Tobermory was silent, but he held eye contact for a moment longer than Marissa expected him to. Perhaps he understood her? He mewed, then curled himself into a black circle on the bed beside her and began to purr.

Training, she thought to herself as she settled under the covers. But who is going to teach me?’

Describe your book in one sentence or fewer than 25 words.

It’s a semi-autobiographical journey of growth and self-love, weaving magic into every-day reality through the eyes of a therapist-in-training.

What was the inspiration behind this book?

My life! I wanted to illustrate how the human psyche works in the realms of the imagination, while telling a spinning good yarn. Many of the stories and issues Marissa’s clients experience have come into my office over the years and I thought people might find them interesting, as well as going on a journey of growth alongside the main character as she heals her heart and finds her way in the world.

What kind of research did you have to do for it?

12 years of private practice as a shamanic psychotherapist! Alongside all my years of training, I guess I’ve been researching for this book most of my life!

Which character was your favorite to write?

Besides Marissa, who is the main character, I love Terry. He’s a model, gay, and very funny. He’s also deeply intuitive, maybe not so wise at times, but he has a good heart.

To which character did you relate the most?

Marissa is a little more confused than I would have been in real life, she mulls things over and writes stuff down in a notebook when it bothers her – which is something that I used to do when I was her her age too. She persistes, she’s courageous and not afraid to make mistakes, or learn from messing up, Though she’d rather not make a mistake, she knows it’s the way forward.

Will we see these characters again?

Awakening is part one of three, book 2 is already published – it’s called Transformation. And the third one will be published January 2023. I guess The Inner Compass is one epic novel split into three parts.

Why should we read your book?

When I was small I always thought I was magic, but the world stamped it out of me quickly. I never felt like I belonged here. During the course of my life I grew more confident to persue learning around things I was actually interested in, rather than doing what I thought I needed to do, and during this, I discovered my inner magic. This book is the story of Marissa doing the same thing, learning how to combat low-level anxiety, find her self-confidence, and step up strongly to claim her place in the world.. So if you want to be inspired to remember who you truly are, to be reminded that we are so much more than this physical body, and to cultivate relationships with your spirit guides, angels, and as an aside, to learn how to heal, then this book is for you!

Tell us about your other published works.

I have published many self-care books, practical guides teaching people how to feel better. I thought that changing genre for The Inner Compass Trilogy would be another way to share the magic of how we think, how we grow, and how life can dance with us, when we become aware of our energy and our inner power.

When not writing, what can we find you doing?

Hanging out with my family, I’ve got 4 children, a dog and a cat. I’m also a healer, you can find me hosting online healing sessions, and supporting ‘Abby’s Healing Circle’ 😉 I’m also on Telegram, Instagram and Facebook.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

We all have a superpower – the power of healing ourselves! That’s why I’m here, to remind you! But other than that, I think I’d like to be able to fly.
