What was the inspiration behind this book?

THE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL is book one in my new series, The Sweetheart Ranch. The idea for that came from a wonderfully happy occasion in my life! In early fall of 2016, I was spending hours and hours online researching nearby wedding venues. I never thought I’d get married again, but, surprise, surprise, the magic happened!

So, here I am researching wedding venues, and I came across a charming Victorian house in a neighboring town that looked promising. Ultimately, we chose a different location for our nuptials, but I still loved that Victorian house and kept thinking about it. Being a writer of contemporary westerns, I naturally envisioned a country home rather than a Victorian house. Next thing you know, I’ve created a western-themed wedding ranch complete with hayrides and honeymoon cabins.

The premise for A COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL is also close to my heart. My daughter was asked to officiate her good friend’s wedding at about the same time as I was researching venues. No, she’s not a minister, but it turns out getting ordained online isn’t too difficult. Again, having that writer’s imagination, I started picturing this good looking cowboy who arrives at Sweetheart Ranch as a temporary substitute wedding officiant, his online certificate in hand. Oh, and he’s a single dad with three young children. From there, the story took off.

Who is your favorite character and what was your favorite scene?

I love the heroine, Molly O’Malley. She’s a little OCD, not unlike me (big grin). She’s got a lot on her plate, having been tasked with a large responsibility, is very career orientated, and has recently endured two broken engagement. All her funny little quirks, if a bit annoying, are understandable. Beneath her tough exterior lies a heart of gold. I felt she deserved her happily-ever-after with Owen, and I hope readers feel the same.

My favorite scene actually comes later in the book. In the opening, Molly’s grandmother has eloped and left Molly in charge of coordinating the weddings along with other duties. Molly is heartsick that her grandmother left without saying goodbye and that she’s missing out on her grandmother’s big day. I love the scene when Grandma and her new husband finally return after a month-long honeymoon, much to Molly’s delight.

What is it about your book that makes it stand out in this competitive genre?

I don’t think there are too many romance books with a cowboy-themed wedding ranch. At least, I haven’t seen any 😊 Neither have I come across a book with a cowboy wedding officiant for the hero. I hope that makes A COWBOY’S CHRISTMAL PROPOSAL a little unique and worth a look.

Describe the ideal cowboy.

Great question because I actually gave a workshop on this very subject. Let’s just set good looking and a great horseman aside. Oh, and a good kisser. Those are a given as far as I’m concerned. I like to write heroes who are the perfect combination of Alpha and Beta, and a cowboy fits the bill. They’re strong, capable, reliable, loyal, intelligent, a devoted husband and family man as well as sensitive, caring, compassionate, and, where the heroine is concerned, vulnerable.

He’s not perfect, he makes mistakes. But he owns up to them and then does his best to fix them. What more can you ask for?

What is something off of your bucket list that you have accomplished/look forward to doing?

I’d love to visit Maine and am hoping to do so in the next year or two (I call Arizona home, so Maine is quite a ways away). I’ve been to three corners of the USA:  Alaska, Hawaii, and St. Croix. All that’s left is the Northeast corner. Maine, here I come.

Writing-wise, I’m in the process of accomplishing a long-held bucket list item. My first audio book is in production and will be released in the spring of 2019. I can’t wait!

What makes Christmas a magical time of year for you?

The answer to that used to be having young children. Christmas becomes something wonderful when shared with them. But, alas, my kids are grown and on their own. This year, my husband and I will be visiting my daughter in Seattle over Christmas. If it snows, and it might, this will be my first white Christmas since I was in eighth grade. Yeah, a long time ago. I think that, and being with my daughter, will make Christmas 2018 a pretty magical one for me!

At a magical time of year…

Can a cowboy help falling in love?

For single dad Owen Caufield, living and working at Sweetheart Ranch for a month is the perfect change of pace. While the cowboy turned wedding officiant can now spend more time with his children, Molly O’Malley, his new boss, is less thrilled. A wedding ranch isn’t the best place for three rambunctious youngsters. But amid the chaos—and the coming holidays—it may be the best place to fall in love…
