Monthly January Food Holiday Observances

January is the month that everyone decides to change their eating habits. It’s a great idea in theory, but remember it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit. One of the mistakes that most people make is trying to do a massive overhaul in one fell swoop. Start small with just one at a time and you will be more likely to make it a permanent dietary change. Luckily with so many great themes for the month, most of which are quite healthy, you should be able to find something to tempt you.

For example, it’s Fat-Free Living Month, so you can find new fat-free recipes to try. With it being Bread Machine Making Month, National Wheat Bread Month, and National Baking Month, you can find healthier ways to make your favorite baked goods. Plus anything you can make at home from scratch is usually going to be healthier for you anyway, as you know what’s really going in there and can control it.

Turn your breakfast around as you learn about new recipes for National Egg Month, National Hot Tea Month, and National Oatmeal Month. Find new lunch and dinner options with National Meat Month, National Slow Cooking Month, and National Soup Month. You can even help yourself get more regular with Prune Breakfast Month (although I can’t imagine!). And sure, let yourself indulge every once in a while with National Candy Month.

Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Mocha Recipe

I love a great cup of hot coffee any day of the year, but especially when it is colder outside. Making it into a mocha makes it even better because then you have the fun flavors going on. And during the holiday season, I want to add in some cinnamon flavoring to feel more festive. So why not try a Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Mocha? There are a couple of ways to make it, and you can easily tweak it to fit your tastes and needs. The first one is easily made on the stovetop using instant coffee and is great all day long. The second version is made using your favorite coffee or espresso and my favorite way to kickstart the day.

Ingredients for an Instant Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Mocha:

  • 1 cup skim milk
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick

How to make an Instant Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Mocha on the stove:

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and place over medium heat.
  2. Add the coffee and cocoa.
  3. Stir in the sugar and salt.
  4. Continue stirring as the mixture heats up to help dissolve the cocoa.
  5. When the cocoa is dissolved add the vanilla extract.
  6. Stir to incorporate all the flavors together.
  7. Remove from the heat and pour into a mug and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

How to make a Cinnamon-Spiced Hot Mocha with fresh coffee

Okay, so maybe you would rather have more real coffee and that real coffee taste in your cinnamon-spiced hot mocha, with even more caffeine. Use your favorite method to brew a great cup of coffee, whether drip, French press, Keurig, or pour-over. Or make a shot of espresso if that is more your style. Follow the above directions for the milk to heat it, only obviously leaving out the instant coffee. If you prefer to steam your milk, do so, only stir the other ingredients into the coffee first. And then for both methods, pour your hot or steamed milk on top of the coffee and enjoy.

November Food Holiday Observances

For me, November truly means fall. The weather is no longer warm. The leaves are really falling off of the trees and I start to think of all things turkey. November is also my mother’s birthday month, so I relish my Thanksgiving memories with her. But there are all kinds of November Food Holiday Observances to enjoy, many of which also make me think of her. Use this to help you to plan your menu at home, for creative snack ideas in the classroom, or party fun! I’ll keep adding links as I come up with them. Pumpkin Spice Latte Variations

Pumpkin spice season seemed to have actually started back in about August. Products started creeping in on the shelves at stores (I’m looking at you, Trader Joe’s!) and all of the memes started flooding my feed. In September, it started to feel a bit more acceptable, as the fall season technically starts. And of course, October is the month that there’s no holds barred when it comes to all things pumpkin. You can even keep it going through November and get away with it.

But grabbing those pumpkin spiced lattes on the go can add up quite quickly. Yes, the bonus points are great, but your pocketbook may not always be appreciative of the addiction. Or now that the weather is getting colder, you may not feel like trying to go out into elements to get your tasty treat. Just imagine curling up with a tasty cup of fall flavors while curled up on the couch. (I know, sometimes it is a total pipe dream, but we’re imagining, right?) So here are a few ways to go about it.
