Lyrian Wallace was only ten years old when the Malevolence struck on October 10, 2056. She thought the next decade had numbed her to the grief, the death, the bots, and the daily struggle for survival. She lost her parents when they became Sleepers, but like everyone else, she had pieced together a new family. Lyrian was almost content when the Alliance began taking them . . .

The world always took things away from her. She could only live for today and never dared to hope for any heaven. But when her circumstances change, Lyrian must choose how she might live for both this life and the next.

1.) Describe your book in 25 words or less.

When the world collapses, your family is gone, and technology fails you, where would you turn for hope when your life is on the line?

2.) What was the inspiration for this book?

I observed a growing sense in our society that we can use technology to solve all our problems, even death. People dream of cheating death. One way or another, people are in search of a technological salvation, one achieved by humanity’s collective intellect and will. As a Christian, I think they’re looking in the wrong place.

Over the past few years, I’ve read several dystopian books and watched dystopian movies, and the thought occurred to me: “Jesus matters to a billion people on Earth, and many times people turn toward God when life gets hard. If these stories are set in a bleaker, darker future, why shouldn’t people be clinging to the hope found in Jesus?”

3.) To which character did you best relate?

As a father, I can relate to Jacob, though I can only imagine his pain. I’d like to think I’m like him, but I’m probably more like Doc: a quirky nerd.

4.) What was one of your favorite scenes?

I really enjoyed the scene where Jacob is sitting in a small cemetery having an imaginary conversation with his deceased daughter. That one tugs at my heart.

5.) What are you currently reading? On your TBR?

I’m finishing up the Rogues trilogy by Kristen Hogrefe Nelson, which is a really creative Christian dystopian trilogy. I’ve also just started reading Synapse by Steven James.

6.) What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

I love working in children’s ministry at my church and have been known to don a wild costume for a skit or two, if it will help teach the kids about God and how Jesus loves them.

What would you do to remember? What would you give to forget?

When Tess Porter agrees to pick up her boyfriend’s college pal at the airport on a snowy December night, she has no idea she’s about to embark on the most dangerous ride of her life.

Two days later, the 17-year-old wakes up in a hospital with broken bones, unable to remember how she got there. Her parents are acting strange, and neither James, her boyfriend, nor her best friend, Izzy, has visited.

As she struggles to physically recover, Tess wrestles with haunting questions: What happened? Will her memory ever return? And what if she’s better off not recalling any of it?

Read an excerpt:

In my hand is a beautiful silver pocket watch on a long, delicate chain. It looks antique, but it’s been polished and shined to appear almost new again. 5:05 it reads. How can it be that late already? I glance at the clock on the mantle. 4:05. It’s been in there since before Daylight Saving Time ended in early November. But how did it get there? Who gave it to Mom? It’s ticking in my hand. A truth bomb. I read the note once more.

“I’m counting the minutes until we’re together again. I’m hoping you’re doing the same.”

I study it. No loops or swirls. This isn’t a woman’s script. Aside from the fact that someone is pretty eager to see Mom again, what does this mean? I haven’t a clue, but I do know this: That is not my father’s handwriting.
