Describe your book in one sentence or fewer than 25 words.

An unlikely heroine faces impossible odds. A healer longs for adventure. Magic and mayhem collide in this award-winning epic fantasy adventure.

Which character was your favorite to write?

My favorite characters ebb and flow which each book in the series. In the first book (Rising), Abigial’s struggles of self-doubt and being overwhelmed with what she’s tasked to do are obstacles I enjoyed watching her navigate. By book two (Honor), Malakai is a supporting character that adds a new dynamic to the story. By book three (Ashes), I’m back to Abigail as she tries to balance a career, a family, a spouse, and a civil war. Who can’t relate to that? By book 4 (Conquest, releases in June) I’m back to Malakai as he finds ways to help Abigail on her long, dangerous quest home (although I do find Malakai’s brownie ghost quite endearing). Book 5 will be the final installment and it will be exciting to see who I favor.

Who would be your dream narrator for the audio book version?

Eva Green (Casino Royale, The Golden Compass, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children). She has a wonderfully rich British voice that would make the characters come to life.

Why should we read your book?

Lovers of fantasy will enjoy a strong female lead, a world of magic and mysticism, and a foe unlike any other. The series makes for a fun read and enchanting escape from the struggles of every day life. The books are filled with action, adventure, magic, battles, giants, brownies, man-eating octopi, wizards, ghosts, and romance. If you’re still not sure … book 1 ebook is 99c during my book tour (April through June and the series is available on Kindle Unlimited).

What do you hope people will get out of your book?

First and foremost, I hope people get enjoyment—an escape to a fantasy world of magic and mayhem. Next, I hope that readers will relate to the characters’ struggles. While we may not have magic and the world isn’t on the brink of destruction, we all face intermittent overwhelming challenges. We may react to these challenges as the characters in my fantasy series do—fear, insecurity, anger, and self-doubt—before we transform those feelings into productive engery to face the task at hand. Each of us has the ability to find our inner champion.

On what are you currently working?

I am currently doing the final edits of book 4, The Avant Champion ~Conquest~

The current sequence of this series is as follows:

Book 1: The Avant Champion ~Rising~

Prequel: Malakai ~an Avant Champion Story of Malos novelette~ (best read after book 1 or 2)

Book 2: The Avant Champion ~Honor~

Book 3: The Avant Champion ~Ashes~

Book 3.5: Brothers’ Bond

Book 4: The Avant Champion ~Conquest~ (coming June 2019)

Book 5: coming 2020

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

My superpower of choice would be psychokinesis—the ability to move objects with my mind. After all, it’s a rather Jedi trait to have (more than just moving rocks, though).

As a writer, I envision churning more books out if I could jog and write at the same time… while walking the dog! Imagine how easy I could fix my next cup of inspirational coffee without disrupting the writing process. As a mother of two boys, I could be reining hide-and-seek champion forever (insert diabolic laugh here); I picture myself levitating to a closet ceiling, undetected. And, with the ability to manipulate objects, I could finally beat my husband in tennis!

Of course, I would also use my powers toward achieving world peace.

Read an excerpt:

I could hear the confused murmurs of the drivers. Then, the dismissive humphs presumably accompanied by dismissive shrugs.

The carriage began to move forward again, encroaching on some dreadful fate. Even as the lanterns around us illuminated once again, I felt engulfed in numbing darkness.

Paul?

The Queen gazed impassively forward, then with a faint disinterested yawn, spoke. “I think we’ll take a walk for the remaining distance. I’ve not stretched my legs all night.”

One of the guards snapped his fingers, and the carriage halted.

Walk? Out there? With those things?

Despite my quivering knees, I followed the Queen out of the carriage. I had been conditioned over the last several months to follow orders, so it was less of a struggle than it might have been.

When the guards began to follow us, she stopped them with a faint flick of her wrist. “We’re on the castle grounds. We’ll be safe here.”

I wanted to contradict her but my throat seemed to have convulsed shut, the way vocal cords spasm when liquid threatens to erroneously enter the windpipe. It was all I could do just to breathe.

They bowed and climbed back into the carriage.

Floating in a world of confusion, I walked beside her stiff figure. How could we possibly be safe? I started to turn, wanting to look back and see Paul safely sitting in his carriage, though I knew he wasn’t there.

“Don’t,” she snapped in a hushed tone. “Your brother is dead now, and you will be as well if you let on that you saw anything.”

I stiffened, focusing on putting one foot in front of the other while the starry night spun dizzyingly around me. “I don’t understand, mum,” I managed to whisper.

She pursed her lips disapprovingly. “It’s obvious we’re under attack. They are already on the grounds.”
